Skincare Routine for Pakistan’s Summer Heat

Skincare Routine for Pakistan’s Summer Heat

Aloe leaves, cucumber slices, a white towel and a glass of lemon water on a marble counter

If you live in Pakistan, you know that summer is not just warm, it is relentless. From April right through to September, the heat, sweat, dust and sun can leave your skin feeling sticky, shiny and tired by the afternoon. The temptation is to skip everything and just splash water on your face. Or to do the opposite and pile on five products.

Neither works well. What helps is a short, sensible routine that suits the weather. Here is how I would build one.

What heat does to your skin

When it is hot, your skin tends to make more oil and you sweat more. Sweat mixes with oil, dust and sunscreen, and by evening your face has quite a lot sitting on it. Humidity adds to that heavy feeling. Added to this, strong sun can leave your skin looking dull and uneven over time.

So the summer goal is simple: keep your face clean, keep it comfortable, and protect it from the sun.

Step 1: a gentle wash, morning and night

Wash twice a day with lukewarm or cool water and a gentle face wash. Avoid the urge to wash five times a day, because that tends to leave skin tight and irritated. If you sweat a lot, a plain water rinse in between is fine. For the full technique, read our guide on how to wash your face the right way.

Step 2: a light moisturiser

Many people skip moisturiser in summer because their face already feels oily. That is a common mistake. Skin that feels dry can look oilier, so a light, gel-type moisturiser helps keep things comfortable without feeling heavy. Look for words like gel, light or water-based, and avoid thick creams in the daytime.

Step 3: sunscreen, every single day

If you only do one thing, make it this. Apply sunscreen every morning, even on cloudy days, and reapply if you are outside for long periods. Choose one that feels light on your skin, otherwise you will not use it. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, and give it a minute to settle before going out.

Sunscreen is also the step that matters most if you care about an even-looking skin tone. A brightening product can only do so much if your skin is in the sun all day without protection.

Step 4: keep it cool

A few small habits go a long way. Keep a small bottle of rose water or a hydrating mist in your bag. Carry blotting papers for the shiny moments, and press them gently on your forehead and nose instead of rubbing. Drink enough water, and wear a wide-brimmed hat or use an umbrella when you can. Pakistani summers are a good excuse to carry one.

A simple summer routine

  1. Morning: gentle face wash, light moisturiser, sunscreen.
  2. During the day: blot when needed, reapply sunscreen if outdoors for a long time.
  3. Night: remove sunscreen and the day with your face wash, rinse well, then a light moisturiser.

Things to skip in the heat

  • Heavy creams and oils in the daytime, they tend to feel greasy.
  • Hot water, it can leave skin irritated and tight.
  • Harsh scrubs. Heat already makes skin feel sensitive.
  • Trying five new products at once. If your skin reacts, you will not know why.

A word on home remedies

Cucumber slices, aloe and cool water feel lovely on a hot day, and many people enjoy them. Just remember that something feeling pleasant is not the same as it being a treatment. Lemon juice in particular can irritate skin, especially in the sun, so I would avoid putting it on your face.

What about the rest of the year?

Your routine does not have to stay the same all year. When the weather cools, you may find your skin feeling drier, and you can switch to a slightly richer moisturiser. Pay attention to how your face feels, and adjust.

Where our face wash fits

Our Zen Skin Brightening Face Wash is designed for everyday use, so it fits easily into a simple summer routine. Use a small amount, massage gently and rinse well. If your skin is sensitive, do a patch test first. If you have oily skin, you may also like our guide to choosing a face wash for oily skin.

Eating and sleeping for better-looking skin

Skincare is not only about what goes on your face. Heat makes us tired and thirsty, and when we are tired and dehydrated, skin often looks it. Drinking enough water, eating fruit and vegetables that are in season, and getting regular sleep will not replace a routine, but they support it. It is not magic. It is just looking after yourself.

Travel and outdoor days

If you are out all day, such as at a wedding, a market or a long commute, pack a small kit: sunscreen, blotting papers, a small mist or rose water and a tissue. Reapply, blot, refresh. Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands, since the heat makes it easy to transfer dirt.

A note on makeup in the heat

If you wear makeup, keep it light in summer. Heavy foundation tends to slide and feel uncomfortable. A tinted sunscreen or a light layer is often more comfortable. Always remove makeup at night with a proper cleanse before your face wash.

Give it time

Whatever changes you make, give them three to four weeks before deciding if they are working. Summer skin changes quickly, so keep your routine steady and avoid chasing every new trend.

Quick answers

Do I need sunscreen indoors? If you sit near a window, a light layer is still sensible.

Can I skip moisturiser in summer? It is better to use a light one.

How often should I reapply sunscreen? If you are outdoors for hours, every two hours or so is a good rule of thumb.
