Aloe Vera in Skincare: Why It Is Everywhere

Many of us grew up with an aloe vera plant on a windowsill or balcony. Someone’s grandmother would snap off a leaf for a sunburn, a dry patch or just because. So it is no surprise that aloe vera shows up in so many skincare products today.

Here is a simple look at why aloe is popular, how to use it in your routine, and what to be careful about.

What is aloe vera?

Aloe vera is a succulent plant with thick, fleshy leaves. Inside each leaf is a clear gel that is mostly water. That gel is what skincare brands use, in cleansers, gels, creams and masks.

Why is it used in skincare?

Aloe gel feels light and cool, and it is mostly water, which makes it easy to mix into formulas. It is commonly added to products meant to feel soothing and refreshing, and it is often found in gentle cleansers, moisturisers and after-sun products. As always, how a product feels and performs depends on the whole formula, not one ingredient.

Fresh aloe from the plant: yes or no?

Lots of people use fresh aloe gel at home. If you do, please be careful.

  • Wash the leaf and let the yellow sap drain out first. The sap can irritate skin.
  • Use only the clear gel from the inside.
  • Patch test on your arm before putting it on your face.
  • Keep it in the fridge and use it within a day or two, since fresh gel does not last.

Shop-bought products are formulated to be stable and consistent, which is one reason many people prefer them for everyday use.

Who should be careful?

Aloe is well tolerated by many people, but some do react to it. If you have sensitive skin or a known plant allergy, patch test first. If you notice redness, itching or burning, rinse it off and stop using it.

How to use aloe in your routine

The easiest way is through a product you already use, such as a face wash or a light moisturiser.

  1. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water.
  2. Pat your face dry.
  3. Apply a light, aloe-based moisturiser if you like a cooling feel.
  4. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.

A word on summers

Aloe feels especially nice in hot weather. If you want to build a routine for the Pakistani heat, we wrote a guide to summer skincare in Pakistan that goes through each step.

Aloe and other ingredients

Aloe pairs well with other ingredients, such as niacinamide and licorice extract. You can read more about niacinamide in our simple niacinamide guide.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using whole, unwashed aloe leaf sap on the face.
  • Using the same bowl of gel for days.
  • Skipping sunscreen because the skin feels cool and soothed.
  • Believing that anything natural is always safe for every skin.

Aloe in different forms

You will find aloe in gels, creams, face washes, sheet masks and after-sun lotions. A pure aloe gel can feel cooling, but it is mostly water, so it may not be enough as a moisturiser on its own, especially in winter. A cream with aloe in the formula can give you both.

How to choose an aloe product

Read the label. If aloe vera is listed near the top, there is more of it in the formula. Look for a short, clear ingredient list, and avoid products with strong fragrance or colour if your skin is sensitive. A bright green gel is not necessarily better than a clear one.

Storing products

Keep your products away from direct sunlight and heat, which is especially important in Pakistani summers. A cool cupboard is better than a bathroom shelf in July. Close the lid tightly and use clean fingers or a clean spatula.

Be patient

Aloe feels pleasant straight away, but visible changes in how your skin looks take longer. Give any routine three to four weeks, and keep it simple so you can tell what is working.

Aloe for sunburn: a caution

Aloe is famous as an after-sun product, and a cool gel does feel nice on warm skin. But if you have a painful or blistering sunburn, aloe is not a substitute for medical care. See a doctor if it is severe. The best answer to sunburn is to avoid it with sunscreen and shade.

Who tends to like aloe products

People who enjoy light textures often like aloe, especially in humid weather, and those who dislike heavy creams. If you prefer something rich, you might find aloe alone too light, and a cream that includes it will suit you better. There is no right or wrong, only what your skin enjoys.

A small routine to try this week

Try this for two weeks: wash your face gently morning and night, apply a light moisturiser, and sunscreen in the morning. Take one photo at the start and one at the end, in the same light. Then decide for yourself what is working and what is not. That is a better test than any advertisement.

Quick answers

Can I leave aloe gel on overnight? If it suits your skin, some people do, but start with short periods and patch test.

Is aloe good for oily skin? Its light texture works for many oily skin types, but results vary.

Can I use aloe with sunscreen? Yes. It does not replace sunscreen.
